"And Jesus, when He came out, saw a great multitude and was moved with compassion for them, because they were like sheep not having a shepherd. So He began to teach them many things."
THE HEART OF THE MATTER
The other day while I was at the gas station putting gas in my car, I observed a homeless man digging through the trash cans. I thought nothing of it until he approached me and, smiling, asked for change. He didn't look or act threatening in any way but my first reaction was to say no without thinking about it. Not wanting to be bothered, I quickly got into my car and drove away. The Holy Spirit prompted me to look in my rearview mirror and watch him walk away. And I immediately felt convicted. I did have change to spare, and I shouldn't have been afraid to give it to that man.
The Bible says that God sees past our appearance and judges our hearts. In other words, He knows our thoughts, motives and intentions. I don't know what that homeless man would've done with the money. But I do know that he was in need and I had the means to help him. I missed an opportunity to be a blessing and to receive a blessing.
Lord, help me to see people as You see them. Help me to be eager to help those in need. Give me a caring and generous heart. Let Your light shine through me. In Jesus' name, Amen.
